Sutton Stage 2 Exam Format Breakdown
| Test Component | Sutton Stage 2 Exam Format | Our Mock |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | Written Mathematics paper requiring candidates to produce their own answers rather than complete a multiple-choice paper | 45-minute written Mathematics paper containing free-response questions |
| Maths Working | Written-response format allows candidates to work through problems on the question paper | Children are required to show their working and record their own answers |
| English | Written English assessment rather than a multiple-choice paper | Creative Writing paper requiring an extended written response to a set task |
| Writing Skills | Written responses require children to communicate clearly and accurately. The Nonsuch and Wallington girls’ test specifically includes an English composition task rather than a comprehension paper. | Children practise planning, structuring and producing an extended piece of writing in response to a specific task |
| Response Format | English and Maths are not multiple choice | Both mock papers require children to produce their own written responses |
| Core Subjects | English and Mathematics | Mathematics plus focused English Creative Writing practice |
The Sutton Stage 2 schools currently assess written English and Mathematics. Our mocks focus on free-response Mathematics and extended English writing, giving children practice producing their own answers rather than relying on multiple-choice options.
Why These Sutton Stage 2 11 Plus Mock Exams Are Different
These mocks are designed specifically around the written-response demands of Sutton Stage 2, rather than being generic Maths and English papers with the Sutton name added.
| Sutton Stage 2-specific feature | What this means for your child |
|---|---|
| Current Sutton research | The mocks are reviewed against reliable information about the current Sutton second-stage entrance examinations. |
| Written-response preparation | Stage 2 moves away from the multiple-choice format used in the SET, so children practise producing their own answers. |
| Free-response Mathematics | Children must solve mathematical problems, show appropriate working and record their own answers. |
| Extended English writing | Children practise responding directly to a writing task and developing a sustained, appropriately structured response. |
| Writing technique | The Creative Writing paper gives children practice with planning, paragraphing, vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation. |
| Time pressure | Timed papers help children practise maintaining accuracy and written quality while working within a restricted period. |
| Parent invigilation guidance | Instructions explain how to administer both papers independently at home without helping once the assessment has started. |
| Detailed review | Answers and writing guidance help identify weaknesses in mathematical knowledge, working, accuracy, written expression and exam technique. |
Schools That Use Sutton Stage 2 Testing
Five of the six schools participating in the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test use a second-stage entrance examination. The schools are split into separate boys’ and girls’ Stage 2 tests.
Shared Stage 2 examination for boys:
| Sutton Grammar School |
Wallington County Grammar School |
Wilson’s School |
Joint Stage 2 examination for girls:
| Nonsuch High School for Girls |
Wallington High School for Girls |
Greenshaw High School does not use a Stage 2 entrance examination. It uses the outcome of the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test for its selective ability places, so Greenshaw is not included in the Stage 2 school list.
