Reading School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Reading School 11 Plus is set by FSCE and consists of four papers: Adventure, Beacon, Compass and Discovery, covering Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, Music, PE and Science.
Paper 1 – Adventure contains a mixture of the tested subjects and uses multiple-choice questions.
Paper 2 – Beacon contains a mixture of the tested subjects, with children required to provide short written answers.
Paper 3 – Compass also draws from the wider subject range and uses multiple-choice questions.
Paper 4 – Discovery requires a creative response.
Our current Reading School information does not publish exact timings for the four individual papers, so these should not be invented or inferred from another FSCE examination.
What Does the Reading School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
Reading School has a particularly broad 11 Plus structure because children need to prepare for more than English and Maths alone. Adventure, Beacon and Compass may draw on knowledge from across the wider Key Stage 2 curriculum.
This makes flexible recall important. Children need to be able to move between subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Geography, English, Computing and other curriculum areas without being told that a whole paper will focus on one subject.
The different response formats also matter. Adventure and Compass use multiple-choice questions, while Beacon requires children to produce short written answers. Children therefore need both the ability to recognise a correct answer from options and the confidence to recall and generate answers independently.
Discovery creates another distinct demand because it requires a creative response rather than conventional question answering.
A sensible preparation progression is strong KS2 foundations → wider curriculum knowledge → English and Maths fluency → response-format technique → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → complete Reading School mock exams.

Reading School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Reading School 11 Plus pass mark.
A percentage achieved on one of our Reading School mocks should primarily be used to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.
The breadth of the Reading School examination also means that an overall percentage can conceal weaker areas. A child may achieve a reasonable total result while consistently losing marks in a particular curriculum subject or response format.
Our detailed answers can help identify whether marks are being lost because of knowledge gaps, vocabulary, accuracy, recall, written-response technique, timing or general exam technique.
Parents can then target those weaker areas before using another fresh Reading School mock to assess whether performance improves.
How to Prepare for the Reading School 11 Plus
Effective Reading School preparation should reflect the breadth of the real assessment. Strong English and Maths provide important foundations, but children must also maintain secure knowledge across the wider Key Stage 2 curriculum.
Preparation should begin with underlying knowledge and skills before moving towards increasingly demanding timed and mixed-subject work.
Wider Curriculum Preparation
The Reading School test covers Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, Music, PE and Science.
Children therefore need secure curriculum knowledge rather than preparing as though Reading School uses a conventional English-and-Maths-only entrance examination.
As preparation develops, children should increasingly practise recalling information without being told in advance which curriculum area will appear next. This helps prepare for Adventure, Beacon and Compass, where different subjects can appear within the same paper.
English Preparation
Strong English skills support both direct English questions and the ability to interpret questions accurately across the wider examination.
Preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar, together with the ability to read unfamiliar material carefully and efficiently.
Vocabulary is particularly useful because secure word knowledge makes it easier to understand both passages and instructions without unnecessary delay.
Maths Preparation
Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before significant time pressure is introduced.
Children should then progress towards problems where they must independently identify which mathematical knowledge or method is required.
This develops flexible problem solving rather than dependence on questions being grouped neatly by topic.
Multiple-Choice and Short Written Response Technique
Adventure and Compass use multiple-choice questions, while Beacon requires short written answers.
For multiple-choice work, children should read each question carefully, eliminate unsuitable options where useful and record answers accurately rather than relying on guessing.
Short written responses create a different challenge because the answer must be generated independently. Children therefore need secure recall and should practise answering questions without relying on options for clues.
Creative Response Preparation
The Discovery paper requires children to produce a creative response.
Preparation should build the ability to develop and organise ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and communicate effectively while maintaining technical accuracy.
Children should develop these underlying writing skills before placing excessive emphasis on completing repeated full creative tasks under time pressure.
Building Exam Technique and Stamina
Once the underlying knowledge and skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.
Children should progress from accurate untimed work to shorter timed activities, mixed-subject practice and eventually complete Reading School mock papers.
The four-paper structure means that concentration, subject switching and response-format switching are all important. Children need to remain accurate as they move between different curriculum areas and different ways of answering questions.
