Greenshaw High School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Greenshaw High School 11 Plus follows the Sutton selective-testing route, consisting of Stage 1 English and Maths followed, for successful candidates, by Stage 2 free-response Maths and Writing.

Stage 1 Paper 1 – Maths contains 50 questions and lasts 45 minutes.

Stage 1 Paper 2 – English contains 34 questions and lasts 50 minutes. Learning Street’s current Sutton information highlights the importance of comprehension, with two comprehension texts included within the English paper.

The Sutton English test also places particular emphasis on vocabulary and technical English. This means children need strong underlying literacy skills rather than simply familiarity with standard practice-paper questions.

Children who successfully progress beyond Stage 1 move on to Stage 2. Learning Street’s current Stage 2 information describes this as two papers: a free-response Maths paper followed by a Writing paper.

The difference between the stages is important. Stage 1 requires children to work accurately and efficiently through English and Maths questions, while Stage 2 also requires them to generate their own mathematical responses and produce an extended piece of writing.

What Does the Greenshaw High School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

Preparation for the Greenshaw High School 11 Plus should initially focus on the English and Maths skills needed for the Sutton SET.

English preparation needs particular attention because Learning Street’s Sutton courses include comprehension, vocabulary and technical English specifically to reflect the demands of the test. Children need to read accurately, understand unfamiliar vocabulary and deal confidently with detailed language questions.

Maths preparation should develop secure KS2 foundations before substantial timed work begins. Children need to be able to recognise which mathematical method a problem requires and apply it accurately without excessive working.

Children should also become comfortable maintaining concentration across relatively long Stage 1 papers. Reading speed, accuracy and stamina can become increasingly important once the underlying skills are secure.

If a child progresses to Stage 2, preparation changes again. Maths answers need to be produced independently rather than selected from multiple-choice options, while the Writing paper requires children to plan, organise and complete a coherent piece within test conditions.

A sensible progression is therefore core English and Maths skills → accuracy → Sutton-specific question practice → timed Stage 1 work → Stage 1 mocks → focused Stage 2 preparation if required.

Greenshaw High School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Scores

Learning Street’s current Greenshaw High School preparation information does not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Greenshaw High School 11 Plus pass mark.

A score achieved on a Learning Street Sutton mock should therefore be used primarily to monitor preparation and progress rather than treated as an official qualifying score.

This is especially important in a two-stage process. Stage 1 practice should help identify whether children can maintain accuracy and pace across English and Maths, while Stage 2 preparation requires a different assessment of free-response Maths and Writing.

An overall mock percentage can also hide important weaknesses. A child may be performing strongly overall while still losing marks consistently through comprehension, technical English, vocabulary, a particular Maths topic, careless errors or time pressure.

Practice results are most valuable when they show why marks are being lost so that preparation can be adjusted before the next fresh mock.

How to Prepare for the Greenshaw High School 11 Plus

Effective Greenshaw High School 11 Plus preparation should build strong English and Maths foundations before children rely heavily on full Sutton mock papers.

Learning Street’s dedicated Sutton programmes develop Vocabulary, English and Maths through structured learning, revision and timed testing, with particular emphasis on the technical English requirements of the Sutton SET.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar and technical English.

Comprehension is particularly important because Learning Street’s current Stage 1 format contains two comprehension texts. Children need to read quickly enough to complete the paper while still understanding detail, vocabulary and meaning accurately.

Technical English also deserves deliberate preparation. Children should become secure with language rules and question types rather than assuming ordinary reading practice alone will cover everything required.

Vocabulary should be developed systematically throughout preparation because it affects both comprehension and children’s ability to interpret more demanding English questions efficiently.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations need to become accurate and fluent before substantial time pressure is introduced.

Children should then progress towards mixed problems where they have to decide independently which mathematical method is required.

This is particularly valuable for Sutton because children who reach Stage 2 need to complete a free-response Maths paper. They therefore need to be capable of producing the answer independently rather than relying on multiple-choice options.

Accuracy should come before speed. Once the underlying methods are secure, timed work can be used progressively to develop pace and concentration.

Writing Preparation for Stage 2

Children who progress to Stage 2 also face a Writing paper.

Preparation should develop the ability to generate ideas, plan efficiently and produce a clear, well-organised piece of writing within test conditions.

Children should work on vocabulary, sentence control, spelling, punctuation and organisation alongside the ability to adapt their writing to different tasks.

Building Exam Technique and Stamina

Once core English and Maths skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.

Stage 1 requires children to sustain concentration through substantial English and Maths papers, while Stage 2 introduces a different response style. Children should therefore learn how to manage time, recover from difficult questions and continue working accurately throughout the paper.

Learning Street’s Sutton mocks can then be used to bring those skills together under realistic test-style conditions.
