The Latymer School 11 Plus Exam Format

The current Latymer School 11 Plus consists of three timed papers: Paper 1 Maths, Paper 2 Verbal Reasoning and Paper 3 English, with the English paper divided between Comprehension and Creative Writing.

Paper 1 — Maths

The Maths paper lasts 30 minutes and uses a multiple-choice format.

Children therefore need secure mathematical foundations alongside the ability to work accurately and efficiently within a relatively short timed paper.

Paper 2 — Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning paper lasts 30 minutes.

Preparation should develop both a broad vocabulary and reliable techniques for tackling different Verbal Reasoning question types.

Paper 3 — English

The English paper lasts 60 minutes in total and contains two distinct elements:

English Comprehension — 30 minutes

Children need to read and understand unfamiliar material accurately while working within the section timing.

Creative Writing — 30 minutes

Children need to plan and produce an effective piece of writing within a fixed time, using clear organisation, appropriate vocabulary and accurate written English.

What Does the Latymer School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The three papers place different demands on children, so preparation needs to develop Maths, Verbal Reasoning, English Comprehension and Creative Writing rather than relying on one generic style of 11 Plus practice.

The separate 30-minute Maths and Verbal Reasoning papers mean children need to become comfortable working accurately within relatively focused time limits.

The English paper requires a different type of stamina because children move from a timed Comprehension section into a timed Creative Writing task within the same 60-minute paper.

A sensible progression is literacy and numeracy foundations → subject skills → reasoning techniques → comprehension and writing development → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → mocks.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.

The Latymer School 11 Plus Pass Marks

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Latymer School 11 Plus pass mark.

Results from our Latymer mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in Maths, Verbal Reasoning, English Comprehension, Creative Writing, accuracy, timing and exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.

How to Prepare for The Latymer School 11 Plus

Effective Latymer preparation should develop secure underlying Maths, English, vocabulary and reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.

Once individual skills are secure, preparation should become progressively more mixed and timed so children learn to apply the correct technique independently while maintaining accuracy and concentration.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 foundations. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before substantial time pressure is introduced.

Children should then progress towards mixed mathematical questions where they have to recognise independently which method is required.

Because the Latymer Maths paper lasts 30 minutes, timed practice should eventually help children develop the balance of pace and accuracy required for a relatively short paper.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning depends on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.

Children should learn systematic methods for the different reasoning question types while developing vocabulary consistently over time.

Once individual techniques are secure, they should progress towards mixed practice where they need to identify the appropriate method independently and apply it efficiently within the 30-minute paper.

English Comprehension Preparation

English preparation should develop strong reading comprehension, vocabulary and technical English skills.

Children should become comfortable reading unfamiliar material carefully, identifying important information, understanding meaning in context and responding accurately within a fixed time.

Regular reading and deliberate vocabulary development are particularly valuable because stronger vocabulary supports both Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning.

Creative Writing Preparation

Creative Writing is a full timed element of the Latymer English paper and should therefore form a core part of preparation.

Children should practise planning before writing, organising their ideas clearly, developing description, using varied vocabulary and sentence structures, and checking spelling, punctuation and grammar.

They should also become comfortable completing both planning and writing within the available 30 minutes.

Preparation should aim to improve genuine writing ability rather than encourage children to memorise one fixed story or response.

Which Latymer School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?

Learning Street offers three main GL preparation routes that can help develop many of the core skills needed for The Latymer School: Complete, Enhance and Boost.

Our full GL programmes cover Vocabulary Development, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The current Latymer test has its own specific three-paper structure covering Maths, Verbal Reasoning, English Comprehension and Creative Writing, so the general GL course syllabus should not be interpreted as the exact Latymer exam structure.

Because Creative Writing is a full 30-minute element of the current Latymer test, our Creative Writing Course can also be used alongside the main preparation programme.

The most suitable main programme depends largely on how much preparation time remains.

Preparation time Learning Street course Best for
30–40+ weeks Complete GL Our most comprehensive GL preparation
15–30 weeks Enhance GL A shorter structured GL programme
6–15 weeks Boost GL Focused GL preparation when less time remains

Complete GL — 30–40+ Weeks

Our Complete GL 11 Plus Programme is our most comprehensive GL preparation route.

It contains 40 structured parts covering Vocabulary Development, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning, alongside more than 60 timed papers and tests.

The Complete GL 11 Plus Programme

Focused Complete options are also available:

Enhance GL — 15–30 Weeks

Our Enhance GL programme provides a shorter 20-part preparation route covering Vocabulary Development, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

It includes more than 35 timed papers and tests alongside structured learning and detailed answers.

Enhance is most suitable where there is still enough time for substantial preparation but not enough time to work properly through all 40 parts of Complete.

11 Plus Enhance – GL

Focused Enhance options are also available:

Enhance – Vocabulary, English and Verbal Reasoning

Enhance – Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Vocabulary Enhance

Boost GL — 6–15 Weeks

Our Boost GL programme is the shortest full GL preparation route.

It contains 10 intensive parts covering Vocabulary Development, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning and includes more than 25 timed papers and tests.

Boost is most suitable where there is insufficient time to work properly through Complete or Enhance but a family still wants structured preparation.

Focused Boost options are also available:

Boost – Vocabulary, English and Verbal Reasoning

Boost – Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Vocabulary Boost

Starting Earlier?

If your child is still developing the literacy, numeracy, vocabulary and reasoning foundations needed before dedicated Latymer preparation begins, our primary-school course chooser can help you select an appropriate starting point.

Primary School – Course Chooser for Younger Children

Already Completed Substantial Preparation?

Our 11 Plus Revision Course – GL is suitable for children who have already completed substantial preparation through books, tutoring or another programme but now want a structured period of GL-style revision.

It is an intensive four-part course normally completed over approximately 4–6 weeks.

It should not normally be completed after one of our Complete, Enhance or Boost programmes because there is some crossover in the material.

11 Plus Revision Course – GL

Also Sitting Independent School Exams?

Children also sitting independent-school entrance tests may need additional preparation in subjects or formats beyond The Latymer School entrance test.

The courses below are separate supplementary options and should not be interpreted as additional elements of the Latymer assessment.

11 Plus Maths Stretch and Revision
