Wilson’s School 11 Plus: Exam & Preparation Guide

Wilson’s School uses a two-stage entrance process. Stage 1 is the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET), consisting of separate Maths and English papers. Candidates who progress then sit a second-stage assessment focusing on free-response Maths and Writing. This guide explains the current test structure, what it means for preparation, and how Learning Street’s bespoke Sutton courses and mock papers can help your child prepare effectively.

Wilson’s School 11 Plus Exam Format

Wilson’s School uses a two-stage entrance process, with Stage 1 consisting of separate Maths and English SET papers, followed by Stage 2 free-response Maths and Writing for candidates who progress.

Stage 1 – Paper 1: Maths

The Stage 1 Maths paper lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 questions.

Children need secure KS2 mathematical knowledge alongside the ability to work accurately through mixed questions within a demanding time limit.

Stage 1 – Paper 2: English

The Stage 1 English paper lasts 50 minutes and contains 34 questions.

The paper includes two comprehension texts, so children need sufficient reading speed and stamina to process substantial unfamiliar material accurately.

Preparation should also develop vocabulary and technical English alongside comprehension.

Stage 2 – Paper 1: Maths

Stage 2 Maths uses free-response questions.

Children therefore need to move beyond selecting from answer choices and become comfortable choosing methods, carrying out calculations and producing answers independently.

Stage 2 – Paper 2: Writing

The second Stage 2 paper focuses on Writing.

Children need to organise ideas, communicate clearly and produce accurate sustained writing independently.

What Does the Wilson’s School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

Preparation should initially focus on the Maths and English skills required for the Stage 1 SET while gradually developing the independent written-response skills needed for Stage 2.

For Maths, children need secure arithmetic, strong KS2 knowledge and flexible problem-solving skills. Accuracy should be established before substantial time pressure is introduced.

For English, preparation should develop comprehension, vocabulary and technical English. Because Stage 1 contains two comprehension texts, children also need strong reading stamina and the ability to process unfamiliar material efficiently.

Stage 2 changes the way children respond. Maths requires independently produced answers, while Writing requires sustained written work, so both skills should be developed progressively alongside Stage 1 preparation.

A sensible progression is literacy and numeracy foundations → English and Maths skills → vocabulary and technical English → accuracy → flexible application → written-response development → revision → timed SET work → Stage 1 mocks → Stage 2 preparation.

Wilson’s School 11 Plus Pass Marks

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Wilson’s School 11 Plus pass mark.

Results from our Sutton mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in English, Maths, comprehension, vocabulary, technical English, written responses, timing and exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.

How to Prepare for Wilson’s School 11 Plus

Effective preparation should develop secure English and Maths foundations before children rely heavily on complete timed mock papers.

Once individual skills are established, preparation should become progressively more mixed and timed so children learn to identify the correct approach independently while maintaining accuracy.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 foundations. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before substantial time pressure is introduced.

Children should then progress towards mixed problem-solving questions where they need to decide independently which method is required.

For Stage 2, preparation should increasingly include free-response work where children produce their own answers and show appropriate working rather than select from given options.

English Comprehension Preparation

Stage 1 English includes two comprehension texts, so children need to develop both reading accuracy and stamina.

Preparation should include increasingly demanding unfamiliar passages, with children learning to locate evidence, interpret meaning and understand vocabulary in context.

Reading speed should improve gradually without sacrificing accuracy.

Vocabulary and Technical English Preparation

Vocabulary and technical English are important elements of Sutton SET preparation.

Children should build vocabulary consistently over time and develop secure spelling, punctuation and grammar knowledge.

They should also become comfortable applying these skills within mixed English questions rather than only completing isolated exercises by topic.

Writing Preparation

Stage 2 includes Writing, so children should develop sustained written-expression skills alongside their Stage 1 preparation.

They should practise planning efficiently, organising ideas clearly, using appropriate vocabulary and varied sentence structures, and maintaining accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Preparation should build adaptable writing ability rather than rely on memorised responses.

Which Wilson’s School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?

Learning Street offers bespoke Sutton SET preparation through our Complete, Enhance and Boost programmes.

These courses focus on Vocabulary Development, English – including comprehension and technical English – and Maths, matching the core skills required for Stage 1.

The main Sutton courses are principally designed around SET preparation. Children who progress should then add Stage 2 free-response Maths and Writing practice rather than treating the Stage 1 course structure as an exact model of the second stage.

The most suitable programme mainly depends on how much preparation time remains.

Preparation time Learning Street course Best for
30–40+ weeks Complete Sutton (SET) Our most comprehensive Sutton preparation
15–30 weeks Enhance Sutton (SET) A shorter structured Sutton programme
6–15 weeks Boost Sutton (SET) Focused Sutton preparation when less time remains

Complete Sutton (SET) — 30–40+ Weeks

Our Complete 11 Plus Programme – Sutton (SET) is our most comprehensive Sutton preparation route.

It contains 40 structured parts covering Vocabulary Development, English – including technical English – and Maths, alongside more than 50 timed papers and tests.

The programme places additional emphasis on core skills such as vocabulary development and working accurately in Maths and English.

The Complete 11 Plus Programme – Sutton (SET)

Enhance Sutton (SET) — 15–30 Weeks

Our Enhance Sutton programme provides a shorter 20-part preparation route.

It covers Vocabulary Development, English – including comprehension, vocabulary and technical English – and Maths, and includes more than 35 timed papers and tests.

Enhance is most suitable where there is still enough time for substantial structured preparation but not enough time to work properly through all 40 parts of Complete.

11 Plus Enhance – Sutton (SET)

Boost Sutton (SET) — 6–15 Weeks

Our Boost Sutton programme is the shortest bespoke Sutton preparation route.

It contains 10 intensive parts covering Vocabulary Development, English – including comprehension and technical English – and Maths and includes more than 25 timed papers and tests.

Boost is most suitable where there is insufficient time to work properly through Complete or Enhance but a family still wants structured Sutton-specific preparation.
