King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys 11 Plus Exam- About the test

The 11 plus exam for King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys is the Birmingham exam which uses GL to set the tests. Children will be tested in four subjects:

  • English
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Maths

The Birmingham 11 Plus uses two papers , one paper focusses on literacy and contains English and verbal reasoning questions. The second paper includes maths and non-verbal reasoning. Each paper includes 60 minutes of questions with timed sample practice sessions taking a further 15 minutes.

Our Complete 11 Plus Programme fully prepares children for all of these subjects. The course is fully structured so that we build up core skills and introduce children to the new skills they will need for the exam. The course includes about 2000 pages, 30,000 questions and roughly 60 timed tests.

Not only is the course effective but it really helps parents by taking away the need to research which books to buy and then decide which ones to do when and how much of each subject to do. Our courses are not only available to parents as private tutors also use them to support the children in their care.

If parents have less time to prepare then we have two shorter preparation courses available- scroll down for more details.

About King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys

Handsworth Grammar School (HGS) is a selective school that admits boys from the age of eleven and both boys and girls who wish to join the Sixth Form. The School educates students from all over Birmingham and beyond, with a significant proportion living within three miles of the school, thereby helping to maintain a strong community aspect. This is the oldest surviving selective school in Birmingham, but at the same time, they are forward-looking. In fact, it could be said that HGS reaches for the future from the basis of solid foundations. The foundations manifest themselves in the emphasis given to the importance of work, self-discipline, behaviour and achievement. From that foundation, they are able to help our students face and meet the needs of this rapidly changing world, by seeking to embrace new technologies and recognising the importance of links between education and the world of work.
