Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus uses the Kent Test, which consists of two scored multiple-choice tests covering English, Maths and Reasoning, together with a separate writing exercise.

The English and Maths test contains separate sections for the two subjects. Learning Street’s current Kent research reflects five minutes of practice followed by 25 minutes of assessed questions for English, followed by the same structure for Maths.

The Reasoning test lasts approximately one hour including practice and covers Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning.

The scored parts of the Kent Test use multiple-choice questions with separate answer sheets. Children therefore need to develop not only the underlying subject skills but also the ability to record answers accurately while working within strict timings.

The Kent Test also includes a 40-minute writing exercise, including planning time. Learning Street’s Kent Mock Packs focus on the two scored multiple-choice tests, so writing preparation should be completed separately.

What Does the Dane Court Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The breadth of the Kent Test means successful Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus preparation should develop English, Maths, vocabulary and several forms of reasoning rather than concentrating on one or two isolated subjects.

English and Verbal Reasoning are closely connected. Strong vocabulary can help children understand comprehension passages more efficiently and can also make unfamiliar Verbal Reasoning questions easier to interpret.

Maths preparation should build secure arithmetic before children move towards less familiar problem solving. If basic calculations still require too much thought, children can lose valuable time when tackling more demanding questions.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require children to become systematic when analysing visual information. Rather than guessing from appearance, children should learn to identify changes involving shape, number, position, rotation, reflection and shading.

The Kent Test also requires children to sustain concentration, work accurately within timed sections and use separate answer sheets correctly. Preparation should therefore move gradually from core skills to revision, timed work and finally full Kent 11 Plus mock exams.

Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

Learning Street does not recommend treating one fixed raw practice-paper percentage as a permanent Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus pass mark.

The Kent Test assesses performance across English, Maths and Reasoning. A percentage achieved on a Learning Street mock should therefore be used as a preparation measure rather than interpreted as an official Kent Test result.

Mock scores are most useful when they help identify why marks are being lost. A child may need to improve underlying knowledge, vocabulary, accuracy, timing, reasoning technique or the way they record answers under timed conditions.

Parents should look for consistent progress across all of the areas needed for the Kent Test rather than concentrating only on one overall mock percentage.

How to Prepare for the Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus preparation should build the underlying skills first before children rely heavily on complete practice papers.

Learning Street’s approach is to develop English, Maths, vocabulary and reasoning skills systematically, consolidate them through revision and then introduce increasingly timed work as the Kent Test approaches.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Children should become confident reading unfamiliar passages efficiently without sacrificing understanding.

Regular reading is useful, but it should be supported by structured comprehension practice and deliberate vocabulary development so that children learn to interpret increasingly demanding language accurately.

Maths Preparation

Strong KS2 Maths knowledge provides the foundation for the Kent Test. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable before substantial timed work is introduced.

Children should then move towards mixed problems where they must decide independently which mathematical method is required. This helps build flexible problem-solving skills rather than dependence on questions being organised by topic.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning requires both technique and strong vocabulary. Children should learn systematic approaches to word, letter and logical reasoning problems while continuing to broaden their vocabulary.

A child can understand the method behind a question but still struggle if important words are unfamiliar, so vocabulary learning and revision should continue throughout Dane Court Grammar School 11 Plus preparation.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require careful observation. Children should develop a consistent process for checking changes involving shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and shading.

Regular practice should help children apply these methods to unfamiliar visual problems rather than relying on recognition of previously seen examples.

Writing Preparation

The Kent Test also contains a separate writing exercise. Learning Street therefore recommends ensuring children have experience planning and completing a coherent piece of writing within a fixed period.

Writing preparation should develop organisation, vocabulary, sentence control, spelling and punctuation together with the ability to generate and structure ideas efficiently.

Once these core skills are secure, children can begin applying them under realistic timed conditions using Learning Street’s Kent mock exams.
