Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus uses the Buckinghamshire GL Assessment test, consisting of two papers covering English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning.

Paper 1 contains English and Verbal Reasoning. Learning Street’s current Buckinghamshire research reflects a five-minute practice period followed by 25 minutes of assessed English questions, followed by a five-minute Verbal Reasoning practice period and 20 minutes of assessed questions.

Paper 2 combines Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning with Maths. Learning Street’s current mock structure uses five timed Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning subtests, followed by a Maths section with practice time before the assessed questions.

The test uses separate multiple-choice answer sheets. Children therefore need to combine strong subject knowledge with accurate answer recording and the ability to move between sections when instructed.

What Does the Dr Challoner’s Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The breadth of the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus means Dr Challoner’s Grammar School preparation should develop English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning rather than concentrating heavily on one subject.

English and Verbal Reasoning are closely connected through vocabulary. Children may understand a reasoning technique but still lose marks if unfamiliar words make the question difficult to interpret. Regular reading and deliberate vocabulary development should therefore continue throughout preparation.

Maths preparation should first secure core KS2 knowledge, particularly arithmetic and calculation fluency. Once these foundations are reliable, children can spend more time applying their knowledge to unfamiliar and multi-step problems.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require a more visual approach. Children should learn to inspect changes involving shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and shading systematically rather than relying on instinct or guesswork.

The tightly timed sections also make exam technique important. Preparation should therefore develop from core skills → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed practice → complete mock exams.

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

Learning Street’s current Buckinghamshire preparation information does not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus pass mark.

A percentage achieved on a Learning Street mock should therefore be used primarily as a measure of preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.

An overall mock score can also hide important differences between individual sections. A child may appear to be performing strongly overall while consistently losing marks in vocabulary, English comprehension, a particular Maths area or one type of reasoning.

The detailed answers included with Learning Street’s Buckinghamshire mocks are most useful when they help identify whether marks are being lost because of knowledge gaps, accuracy, timing or exam technique.

Parents can then target the weakest areas before using another fresh mock to see whether performance improves under timed conditions.

How to Prepare for the Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective Dr Challoner’s Grammar School 11 Plus preparation should develop secure underlying skills before children rely heavily on complete mock papers.

Learning Street’s approach is to build core English, Maths, vocabulary and reasoning skills first, consolidate them through revision and then introduce progressively more timed work as the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus approaches.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Children need to read unfamiliar material carefully while still working efficiently under time pressure.

Regular reading should be combined with structured comprehension practice. Children should become confident retrieving information, interpreting precise wording and distinguishing between closely related possible answers.

Vocabulary work is particularly useful because it supports both English and Verbal Reasoning.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become sufficiently fluent that routine calculations do not use unnecessary time.

Children should then move towards mixed problems where they must decide independently which mathematical method is required. This develops flexible problem solving rather than dependence on questions being arranged by topic.

Accuracy should be established before substantial time pressure is introduced.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning combines language knowledge with logical thinking. Children should develop reliable methods for different word, letter, code and relationship questions rather than simply memorising the answers to familiar examples.

Vocabulary development is especially important. Even when children understand a reasoning method, unfamiliar words can prevent them from recognising the relationship being tested quickly enough.

New vocabulary should therefore be learnt systematically and revisited regularly throughout preparation.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require children to analyse visual information carefully and systematically.

Children should learn to examine features such as shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and shading. Developing a consistent method makes it easier to approach new problems rather than depending on whether a question looks familiar.

The timed subtest structure also means children need to become comfortable changing quickly between different types of visual reasoning work.

Once these core skills are secure, Learning Street’s Buckinghamshire mock exams can be introduced to develop timing, concentration, stamina and familiarity with separate answer sheets.
