Alcester Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Alcester Grammar School 11 Plus uses the shared West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test provided by GL Assessment. Children sit two multiple-choice papers, each lasting approximately 50–60 minutes including instructions and example questions.

Each paper is divided into smaller individually timed sections testing English Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning. There is no written composition section. Children record their answers on separate multiple-choice answer sheets.

The sections are strictly timed. Instructions, practice questions and timings are delivered centrally, and children can only work on the section they have been instructed to complete. They cannot return to an earlier section once it has finished.

Under the current format, English and Verbal Reasoning together account for 50% of the weighted result, while Maths accounts for 25% and Non-Verbal Reasoning accounts for 25%. Section scores are also standardised to account for differences in age.

What Does the Alcester Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The individually timed structure means that preparation should involve more than simply completing whole practice papers. Children need to become comfortable working accurately within shorter time limits and switching quickly between different types of question.

English Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning together currently carry half of the overall weighting, making strong reading ability and vocabulary particularly important. A child may understand a reasoning method but still lose valuable time if unfamiliar vocabulary slows them down.

Maths preparation should build secure KS2 knowledge alongside arithmetic fluency so that routine calculations do not use unnecessary time. Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require children to identify visual relationships systematically rather than relying on an answer simply looking correct.

Children also need practice recording answers accurately on a separate answer sheet. Secure underlying skills should come first, followed by progressively more timed and realistic practice as the entrance test approaches.

Alcester Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

There is no single permanent score that guarantees a place at Alcester Grammar School.

The West Midlands test scores are age-standardised and weighted before a total score is calculated. Alcester Grammar School then uses an Automatic Qualifying Score and a Required Minimum Academic Standard as part of its admissions process.

These thresholds are determined for the relevant year of entry rather than being a permanent fixed pass mark. They can therefore vary between cohorts, and historic scores should not be treated as a guaranteed target for a future test.

Achieving the relevant academic standard is also only one part of the admissions process. Alcester Grammar School applies its current admissions and oversubscription arrangements when allocating places.

For preparation, it is more useful to aim for consistently strong performance across all four tested areas while identifying weaknesses in knowledge, accuracy and timing.

How to Prepare for the Alcester Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective preparation for Alcester Grammar School should first build secure underlying skills and then help children apply those skills accurately within the individually timed, multiple-choice format used by the West Midlands entrance test.

Learning Street’s GL programmes are designed around this approach. Rather than relying on repeated testing alone, the courses combine structured learning, practice, revision and progressively more timed work across the areas needed for the Alcester Grammar School 11 Plus.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop both reading comprehension and vocabulary. Children need to read unfamiliar material efficiently, understand what they have read and distinguish between plausible multiple-choice answers.

Regular reading should be combined with deliberate vocabulary development and work on spelling, punctuation and grammar. These literacy skills are also valuable for the Verbal Reasoning parts of the test.

Maths Preparation

Secure KS2 Maths is essential, but children also need sufficient arithmetic fluency to complete routine calculations efficiently within timed sections.

Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable. Preparation should then increasingly require children to select the appropriate mathematical method independently and solve unfamiliar problems accurately without a calculator.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning combines reasoning technique with strong language skills. Vocabulary is particularly important because knowing how a question works will not always be enough if a child does not understand the words being used.

Preparation should therefore combine systematic practice of Verbal Reasoning techniques with regular vocabulary development and revision.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning reward careful, systematic observation.

Children should learn to identify relationships involving features such as shape, position, rotation, reflection and spatial movement rather than selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible. Regular practice can help children develop a consistent method for approaching unfamiliar visual problems.

When your child is ready to apply these skills under realistic timed conditions, Learning Street’s West Midlands mock exams provide structured practice based on the known demands of the shared entrance test.
