The Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus has two parts. The current Learning Street mock structure identifies Part One as three short GL papers: Paper 1 English, Paper 2 Verbal Reasoning and Paper 3 Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Paper 1 — English

The first Part One paper covers English. Preparation should therefore develop strong reading comprehension, vocabulary and technical English skills so children can interpret unfamiliar material accurately and efficiently.

Paper 2 — Verbal Reasoning

The second Part One paper focuses on Verbal Reasoning. Children need both a secure understanding of reasoning techniques and a sufficiently broad vocabulary to interpret questions accurately.

Paper 3 — Non-Verbal Reasoning

The third Part One paper focuses on Non-Verbal Reasoning. Preparation should develop a systematic approach to identifying visual patterns, relationships and changes.

The current Learning Street bundle confirms that there is a second part to the entrance process, but our Henrietta Barnett mock series is specifically designed around Part One.

What Does the Henrietta Barnett Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The three Part One papers test different skills, so preparation should develop each area securely before children rely heavily on complete timed mocks.

English and Verbal Reasoning are closely connected through vocabulary. A child may understand a reasoning technique but still struggle if unfamiliar words prevent them from interpreting a question accurately.

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires a different approach, with children learning to analyse visual information systematically rather than choosing an answer simply because it appears plausible.

Preparation should therefore progress from literacy and vocabulary foundations → subject skills → reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → mocks.

The Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus Mock Exams and Practice Papers

At Learning Street, we research the known Henrietta Barnett Part One format, paper length and timings when producing our mocks. We also provide realistic answer sheets, invigilation instructions and guidance on when time should be called so parents can reproduce the practical demands of the test at home as closely as possible.

Please note: Learning Street’s current Henrietta Barnett mocks are designed for Part One of the entrance process. They should not be treated as mock papers for the later stage of the assessment.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.

The Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus Pass Marks

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus pass mark.

Results from our Henrietta Barnett Part One mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in English, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, vocabulary, accuracy and exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.

How to Prepare for The Henrietta Barnett School 11 Plus

Effective Henrietta Barnett preparation should develop secure underlying English, vocabulary and reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock papers.

Once individual skills and techniques are secure, preparation should become progressively more mixed and timed so children learn to identify the correct approach independently while maintaining accuracy and concentration.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Children should become comfortable reading unfamiliar material carefully while maintaining an efficient working pace. They should learn to locate relevant information, understand vocabulary in context and distinguish between closely matched answers.

Regular reading and deliberate vocabulary development are particularly useful because vocabulary also supports Verbal Reasoning.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning depends on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.

Children should first learn systematic methods for individual question types and develop vocabulary consistently over time.

Once individual techniques are secure, they should move towards mixed Verbal Reasoning practice where they have to recognise the correct method independently.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal Reasoning rewards careful and systematic observation.

Children should learn to identify changes and relationships involving features such as shape, position, pattern, rotation and reflection rather than selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible.

Practice should gradually progress from individual techniques towards mixed visual reasoning work completed accurately under increasing time pressure.
