Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus is set by GL and consists of two separate papers: Paper 1 focuses on Verbal Reasoning and Paper 2 focuses on Non-Verbal Reasoning.
Paper 1 – Verbal Reasoning requires children to apply reasoning techniques using language and vocabulary. Strong word knowledge and familiarity with verbal reasoning methods are therefore important.
Paper 2 – Non-Verbal Reasoning requires children to identify patterns, relationships and changes using visual information. A careful and systematic approach is important when tackling unfamiliar questions.
Our current Ripon Grammar School information does not publish exact timings or a particular response format for either paper, so these should not be invented or inferred from another GL test.
What Does the Ripon Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The Ripon Grammar School test has a particularly focused structure because Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning are tested in separate papers.
For Verbal Reasoning, vocabulary and reasoning technique work together. A child may understand how a question type works but still lose marks if unfamiliar words make the question difficult to interpret.
Non-Verbal Reasoning presents a different challenge because children need to work systematically with visual information rather than language. Preparation should help children identify relevant changes and relationships rather than select an answer simply because it looks plausible.
The separate-paper structure also makes subject-specific stamina important. Children need to maintain concentration across sustained Verbal Reasoning work and sustained Non-Verbal Reasoning work rather than relying on frequent changes between subjects.
A sensible progression is vocabulary and reasoning foundations → reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed subject work → complete Ripon Grammar School mock exams.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.
Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus pass mark.
A percentage achieved on one of our Ripon Grammar School mocks should primarily be used to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.
The two-paper structure also means that an overall mock percentage can conceal an important difference between Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning performance.
A child may achieve a reasonable total score while repeatedly losing marks in one of the two papers.
Our detailed answers can help identify whether marks are being lost because of vocabulary, accuracy, reasoning technique, timing or exam technique.
Parents can then target those weaker areas before using another fresh Ripon Grammar School mock to assess whether performance improves.
How to Prepare for the Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus
Effective Ripon Grammar School preparation should concentrate on developing strong Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.
Our full GL programmes cover a wider GL syllabus that also includes Vocabulary, English and Maths. For Ripon Grammar School specifically, however, the current Ripon test information identifies Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning as the tested areas.
Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.
Children should learn systematic methods for the verbal reasoning question types they encounter while also developing vocabulary consistently over time.
New words should be introduced deliberately and revisited regularly rather than memorised briefly before moving on.
A child may understand the reasoning technique required by a question but still struggle if an important word is unfamiliar. Vocabulary development should therefore remain a regular part of preparation.
Because Verbal Reasoning has its own dedicated paper, children should eventually practise maintaining concentration throughout longer periods of reasoning work rather than completing only short exercises.
Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Non-Verbal Reasoning requires children to analyse visual information carefully and identify patterns or relationships.
Preparation should encourage a systematic approach to each question rather than relying on instinct or selecting an option simply because it looks plausible.
Children should become comfortable comparing visual features, identifying changes and applying a consistent reasoning process to unfamiliar problems.
Because Non-Verbal Reasoning has its own dedicated paper, children should eventually practise sustaining accuracy and concentration throughout longer periods of visual reasoning work.
Building Exam Technique and Stamina
Once the underlying vocabulary and reasoning skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.
Children should move progressively from accurate untimed work to shorter timed exercises, longer Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning sections and finally complete Ripon Grammar School mock papers.
Our Ripon Grammar School mocks can then bring the preparation together under realistic test-style conditions and help identify any remaining weaknesses.

Which Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?
We provide Complete, Enhance and Boost GL preparation routes for children preparing for Ripon Grammar School.
Learning Street’s full GL programmes cover Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This is broader than the current Ripon Grammar School test structure, which specifically identifies Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The additional English and Maths content in the general GL programmes should therefore not be interpreted as additional subjects in the Ripon Grammar School entrance test.
The most suitable programme depends mainly on how much preparation time remains.
| Preparation time | Course | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 30–40+ weeks | Complete GL | Our most comprehensive GL preparation |
| 15–30 weeks | Enhance GL | A shorter structured GL programme |
| 6–15 weeks | Boost GL | Focused GL preparation when less time remains |
Complete GL — 30–40+ Weeks
Our Complete GL 11 Plus Programme is our most comprehensive GL preparation route.
It contains 40 structured parts covering Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The programme includes more than 60 timed papers and tests, full answers with detailed explanations and additional work focused on core skills such as vocabulary development and accuracy in English and Maths.
For Ripon Grammar School, the Vocabulary, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning content is directly relevant to the current test. The programme also contains English and Maths because it is designed for the wider GL 11 Plus.

Our Enhance GL programme provides a shorter 20-part preparation route covering Vocabulary Development, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Already Completed Substantial Preparation?
Our 11 Plus Revision Course – GL is suitable for children who have already completed substantial preparation through books, tutoring or another programme but now want a more structured period of GL-style revision.
It contains 4 intensive parts and is normally completed over approximately 4–6 weeks.
It should not normally be completed after one of our Complete, Enhance or Boost programmes because there is some crossover in the material.
