Rainham Mark Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Rainham Mark Grammar School 11 Plus uses the Kent Medway GL test and consists of three separate papers: Paper 1 English, Paper 2 Mathematics and Paper 3 Reasoning, which covers Spatial Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.
Paper 1 – English covers English skills including comprehension, punctuation and grammar.
Children therefore need secure reading comprehension alongside accurate technical English. Vocabulary is also important because unfamiliar language can make both passages and individual questions harder to interpret.
Paper 2 – Mathematics covers mathematical knowledge and problem solving.
Children need secure KS2 methods, reliable arithmetic and the ability to decide independently what method an unfamiliar problem requires.
Paper 3 – Reasoning covers Spatial Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning.
This requires children to switch between language-based reasoning and visual reasoning. Strong vocabulary supports Verbal Reasoning, while Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require careful analysis of shapes, patterns and relationships.
Our current Kent Medway information does not publish exact timings for the three real test papers or specify a particular response format throughout the test, so these should not be inferred from another GL assessment.
What Does the Rainham Mark Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The Kent Medway test requires children to perform strongly across three distinct papers rather than one mixed assessment.
This makes subject-specific concentration particularly important. Children need to sustain their English performance across one paper, mathematical accuracy across another and reasoning performance across a third.
English preparation should develop comprehension, vocabulary and technical accuracy. A child who reads quickly but misses detail may lose marks, while weak vocabulary can make otherwise manageable questions unnecessarily difficult.
Maths preparation should first establish secure methods and numerical fluency. Children can then concentrate on identifying what a problem requires rather than using valuable effort on basic calculations.
The Reasoning paper requires a different style of preparation because it combines Verbal, Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning. Children need to recognise which reasoning approach a question requires and switch between language-based and visual problem solving accurately.
A sensible progression is core English and Maths → vocabulary development → individual reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed subject work → complete Kent Medway mock exams.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.
Rainham Mark Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Rainham Mark Grammar School 11 Plus pass mark.
A percentage achieved on one of our Kent Medway mocks should therefore be used primarily to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.
The three-paper structure means an overall percentage can also hide a significant weakness in one particular area.
A child may perform strongly in English and Maths while repeatedly losing marks in Reasoning, or may achieve a reasonable overall result despite a clear weakness in one of the core subjects.
Our detailed answers can help identify whether marks are being lost because of English knowledge, mathematical knowledge, vocabulary, reasoning technique, accuracy, timing or general exam technique.
Parents can then target those areas before using another fresh Kent Medway mock to see whether performance improves.
How to Prepare for the Rainham Mark Grammar School 11 Plus
Effective Rainham Mark Grammar School preparation should build secure English, Maths and reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.
Our GL programmes cover Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Kent Medway-specific preparation should also recognise that the current real Reasoning paper includes Spatial Reasoning.
English Preparation
English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Children should learn to read unfamiliar material carefully, identify relevant information and understand exactly what each question requires.
Vocabulary should be developed systematically because stronger word knowledge supports comprehension and also helps with the Verbal Reasoning element of the Reasoning paper.
As preparation develops, children should become comfortable sustaining concentration across a complete English paper rather than working only on short isolated exercises.
Maths Preparation
Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before significant time pressure is introduced.
Children should then progress to mixed problems where they need to identify independently which mathematical method is required.
The aim should be to develop both accuracy and flexible problem solving so children can deal with unfamiliar questions without being told the topic in advance.
Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Verbal Reasoning combines language knowledge with logical thinking.
Children should learn reliable approaches to different word, letter, code and relationship questions rather than simply memorising solutions to familiar examples.
Vocabulary is especially important because unfamiliar words can prevent children from using a reasoning technique successfully even when they understand how the question type works.
New vocabulary should therefore be introduced systematically and revisited regularly throughout preparation.
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation
The current Kent Medway test information includes both Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning within Paper 3.
Children should learn to analyse visual information systematically, looking at features such as shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and spatial relationships.
They should avoid choosing an answer simply because it appears visually plausible. A consistent process for identifying the relationship or transformation within a question is much more reliable.
Because our current Kent Medway mock breakdown lists Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning rather than explicitly including Spatial Reasoning, dedicated Spatial Reasoning practice should remain part of preparation alongside the mocks.
Building Exam Technique and Stamina
The three-paper Medway structure means children need to maintain concentration across separate English, Maths and Reasoning assessments.
Timed work should therefore be introduced progressively. Children should first become accurate within individual topics before moving to longer subject sections and ultimately full test papers.
Our Kent Medway mocks can then help bring the English, Maths and core reasoning preparation together under realistic test-style conditions.
