Information and Mock Exam Alignment: The current official Wirral assessment is provided by Quest Assessments. Learning Street’s existing Wirral Mock Exam Packs 1–4 still reflect the preceding GL Assessment format. The preparation guidance on this page therefore distinguishes between the current official test and the Learning Street materials presently available rather than blending the two formats.

Learning Street’s Wirral mocks continue to cover the same broad skill areas of Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning, but they should not currently be described as exact replicas of the new Quest assessment. The school page and mock products should be reviewed together when Learning Street’s Wirral materials are rebuilt for the new provider.

Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The current Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus uses the Wirral selective assessment, which consists of two Quest Assessments papers covering Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths.

The two papers are taken on the same day. Wirral Council currently confirms the subjects assessed but does not publish an exact subject-by-subject paper split or detailed timings on its main assessment guidance, so these should not be assumed from the previous GL test.

Verbal Reasoning requires children to identify and apply relationships involving words, letters, codes and logical rules. Vocabulary is important because unfamiliar language can make otherwise manageable reasoning problems considerably harder.

Maths requires secure mathematical knowledge together with sufficient calculation fluency and problem-solving ability to apply that knowledge efficiently to unfamiliar questions.

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires children to identify visual relationships involving features such as shape, position, number, rotation, reflection and other changes within patterns.

The assessment is designed to determine whether a child has reached the required grammar-school standard. Results are standardised to take account of age, with performance across the assessed components contributing to the final result.

Learning Street’s current Wirral mocks have not yet been rebuilt around the Quest assessment. They still reflect the previous GL structure of two 45-minute papers, each combining Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Families should therefore distinguish between the current official Quest assessment and the format represented in Learning Street’s existing mocks.

What Does the Calday Grange Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The combination of Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning means children need strong vocabulary, secure numerical skills, flexible reasoning technique and the ability to adapt between verbal, mathematical and visual problems.

For Verbal Reasoning, children should develop both a broad vocabulary and systematic techniques for dealing with relationships involving words, letters and codes. Vocabulary development should be continuous rather than left until immediately before the test.

Maths preparation should establish secure KS2 knowledge and reliable arithmetic fluency. Once routine calculations are accurate, children should increasingly practise deciding independently which mathematical method an unfamiliar problem requires.

Non-Verbal Reasoning should be approached systematically. Children need to examine features such as position, number, shading, rotation, reflection and movement rather than selecting an answer simply because it appears visually plausible.

The assessment also requires children to move between substantially different types of reasoning. Preparation should therefore progress from learning individual techniques towards mixed practice and timed work once accuracy is secure.

Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus Mock Exams and Practice Papers

Learning Street currently covers Calday Grange Grammar School through its Wirral 11 Plus Mock Exam Packs 1–4.

These mocks currently reflect the preceding GL Assessment version of the Wirral test. They contain two timed papers covering Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning and have not yet been rebuilt specifically around the new Quest assessment.

They therefore remain useful for practising the broad reasoning and mathematical skills relevant to the Wirral selection process, as well as stamina, multiple-choice technique and working under timed conditions, but families should not treat their exact structure or timings as confirmation of the current Quest test format.

Each Learning Street pack includes realistic answer sheets, detailed parent and invigilation instructions, guidance on how time should be called and detailed answers for reviewing performance afterwards.

The four Wirral mock exams contain entirely different questions, allowing children to complete several practice experiences without repeating the same material.

Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

Children applying to Calday Grange Grammar School must reach the required Wirral grammar-school standard in the selective assessment.

The current Wirral guidance explains that results are standardised to take account of a child’s age. A weighted total is then calculated from performance across the Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning components.

There is no raw practice-paper percentage that guarantees qualification. Commercial practice papers vary in difficulty and do not use the same standardisation process as the official assessment.

Historic numerical qualifying scores from the previous Wirral test should also not automatically be applied to the new Quest assessment. Families should use the current grammar-school standard communicated through the official assessment process rather than assuming that an older threshold remains unchanged.

Reaching the required grammar-school standard means a child is academically eligible to be considered for a place. It does not guarantee admission to Calday Grange Grammar School if the school receives more qualified applicants than it has places available.

For preparation, practice scores are most useful for identifying whether performance is becoming consistently strong across Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning while highlighting weaknesses in technique, vocabulary, accuracy, timing and concentration.

How to Prepare for the Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective preparation for Calday Grange Grammar School should develop secure Verbal Reasoning, vocabulary, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills before progressively introducing mixed practice, timed work and realistic test conditions.

The current Quest assessment and Learning Street’s existing Wirral materials both cover these same broad skill areas, although their precise paper structures should not be treated as identical.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning requires children to understand and apply relationships involving words, letters, codes and logical rules.

A broad vocabulary is particularly important. Children may understand the technique required for a question but still struggle if important words or verbal relationships are unfamiliar.

Preparation should therefore combine deliberate vocabulary development with systematic practice of different Verbal Reasoning techniques. Children should initially focus on understanding how questions work and solving them accurately before speed becomes a priority.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should develop secure KS2 knowledge alongside strong arithmetic fluency and problem-solving skills.

Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become sufficiently reliable that routine calculations do not consume unnecessary time.

Children should increasingly practise deciding which mathematical method is appropriate without being prompted. Once those foundations are secure, timed work can help them maintain accuracy under greater pressure.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires careful, systematic observation.

Children should learn to examine features such as shape, size, position, number, shading, rotation, reflection and movement rather than choosing an answer simply because it looks plausible.

Regular practice should help children develop a repeatable checking process that can be applied to unfamiliar visual problems.

When your child is ready to apply these skills under timed conditions, Learning Street’s current Wirral mock exams can provide structured practice across the same broad reasoning and mathematical areas. Their precise format still reflects the preceding GL assessment and should not currently be treated as an exact Quest replica.

Which Calday Grange Grammar School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?

Learning Street’s current preparation route for Calday Grange Grammar School uses its GL Complete, Enhance and Boost programmes. These courses develop Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning and therefore cover the main underlying skills relevant to the Wirral assessment.

The current Quest test does not list a separate English paper. English work within Learning Street’s GL programmes should therefore be viewed primarily as supporting the literacy, comprehension and vocabulary foundations that contribute to strong verbal performance rather than preparation for a separate Calday English test.

The most suitable Learning Street route mainly depends on how much preparation time remains.
