The Crypt School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Crypt School uses the Gloucestershire FSCE 11 Plus, consisting of three papers: Adventure, Beacon and Compass.
Paper 1 – Adventure
The Adventure paper assesses English and Maths using multiple-choice answer options.
Children therefore need secure English and mathematical knowledge alongside the ability to identify accurate answers efficiently from a set of options.
Paper 2 – Beacon
The Beacon paper also assesses English and Maths, but requires short written answers rather than multiple-choice responses.
This means children need to understand the underlying material securely enough to produce accurate answers independently rather than rely on recognising the correct option.
Paper 3 – Compass
The Compass paper uses multiple-choice questions across a wider range of KS2 curriculum subjects.
The subjects that may be assessed include:
Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Maths, Music, Physical Education and Science.
Compass can draw from this wider subject range, so preparation should not focus exclusively on traditional English and Maths 11 Plus content.
What Does The Crypt School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The Gloucestershire FSCE structure requires broad preparation across both core and wider KS2 knowledge.
English and Maths are particularly important because they are assessed in both Adventure and Beacon, but children need to apply these skills through two different response formats: multiple choice and short written response.
Children should therefore become comfortable both recognising the correct answer and producing accurate answers independently.
Compass adds a broader curriculum requirement because questions can draw on subjects including Science, Geography, History, Computing, Design & Technology, Languages, Music, PE and Art & Design alongside English and Maths.
The three-paper structure also requires children to switch between different subjects and response formats while maintaining concentration and accuracy.
A sensible progression is secure KS2 foundations → English and Maths skills → wider curriculum knowledge → multiple-choice technique → short written-response technique → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → full Gloucestershire FSCE mocks.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.
The Crypt School 11 Plus Pass Marks
We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Crypt School 11 Plus pass mark.
Results from our Gloucestershire FSCE mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in subject knowledge, accuracy, response format, timing and exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.
Because Adventure, Beacon and Compass test different skills and response formats, an overall percentage can also conceal an important weakness in one particular area.
How to Prepare for The Crypt School 11 Plus
Effective preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge rather than immediately relying on complete timed mock examinations.
Once core skills and subject knowledge are established, children can increasingly practise applying them through the different question and response formats used in Adventure, Beacon and Compass.
English Preparation
English is assessed through both Adventure and Beacon.
Preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar and the ability to understand unfamiliar material accurately.
Children should practise both selecting answers from multiple-choice options and producing concise written answers independently.
Maths Preparation
Maths is also assessed through both Adventure and Beacon.
Children should develop secure KS2 mathematical knowledge, accurate arithmetic and flexible problem solving before substantial time pressure is introduced.
Preparation should then include both multiple-choice questions and short written-response problems so children become comfortable producing answers without relying on options.
Short Written-Response Preparation
Beacon requires children to produce short written answers in English and Maths.
Children cannot rely on answer options to identify or check the correct response, so preparation should develop accurate independent recall, clear answers and careful checking.
Compass and Wider Curriculum Preparation
Compass broadens the assessment beyond conventional English-and-Maths-focused 11 Plus preparation.
Children may encounter multiple-choice questions drawing on Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Maths, Music, Physical Education and Science.
Preparation should therefore maintain secure KS2 knowledge across this wider curriculum rather than narrowing study too early to English and Maths alone.
Switching Between Question Formats
The Gloucestershire FSCE assessment requires children to move between multiple-choice questions, short written responses and different curriculum areas.
Once the underlying knowledge is secure, practice should increasingly require children to switch between these formats independently while maintaining accuracy and concentration.

Which The Crypt School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?
Learning Street offers three FSCE preparation routes for children preparing for The Crypt School 11 Plus: Complete, Enhance and Boost.
Our FSCE programmes cover Vocabulary Development, English, Maths and Creative Writing.
The Gloucestershire assessment has its own specific Adventure, Beacon and Compass structure. In particular, Compass can assess a wider range of KS2 curriculum subjects than those listed within the general FSCE course syllabus. The courses should therefore be combined with Gloucestershire-specific practice for the complete exam format.
Creative Writing is included within the wider FSCE course syllabus, but the Gloucestershire exam structure described above does not identify a separate Creative Writing paper. The course syllabus should therefore not be treated as an exact paper-by-paper description of The Crypt School test.
The most suitable programme mainly depends on how much preparation time remains.
| Preparation time | Learning Street course | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 30–40+ weeks | Complete FSCE | Our most comprehensive FSCE preparation |
| 15–30 weeks | Enhance FSCE | A shorter structured FSCE programme |
| 6–15 weeks | Boost FSCE | Focused FSCE preparation when less time remains |
Complete FSCE — 30–40+ Weeks
Our Complete 11 Plus Programme – FSCE is our most comprehensive FSCE preparation route.
It contains 40 structured parts covering Vocabulary Development, English, Maths and Creative Writing, alongside more than 50 timed papers and tests.
For The Crypt School, the English and Maths preparation supports the core skills assessed through Adventure and Beacon. Gloucestershire-specific practice should also be used to develop familiarity with Compass and the wider curriculum subject range.
The Complete 11 Plus Programme – FSCE
Enhance FSCE — 15–30 Weeks
Our Enhance FSCE programme provides a shorter 20-part preparation route.
Each part develops Vocabulary Development, English, Maths and Creative Writing, and the programme contains more than 35 timed papers and tests.
Enhance is most suitable where there is still enough time for substantial structured preparation but not enough time to work properly through all 40 parts of Complete.
Gloucestershire-specific practice should also be used alongside the course to prepare for the complete Adventure, Beacon and Compass structure.
11 Plus Programme – Enhance – FSCE
Boost FSCE — 6–15 Weeks
Our Boost FSCE programme is the shortest FSCE preparation route.
It contains 10 intensive parts covering Vocabulary Development, English, Maths and Creative Writing and includes more than 25 timed papers and tests.
Boost is most suitable where there is insufficient time to work properly through Complete or Enhance but a family still wants structured FSCE preparation.
It should be combined with Gloucestershire-specific practice so children also encounter the wider Compass curriculum and the response formats used across the three papers.
