The Crossley Heath School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Crossley Heath School 11 Plus is set by FSCE and consists of three papers: English, Maths and Creative Writing.
Paper 1 – English focuses on literacy and includes English comprehension together with technical English such as spelling and vocabulary.
Paper 2 – Maths assesses mathematical skills and includes a mixture of multiple-choice and written-answer questions.
Paper 3 – Creative Writing requires children to produce an extended written response.
What Does The Crossley Heath School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The current Crossley Heath FSCE format requires strong foundations in both English and Maths, together with the ability to produce a strong piece of Creative Writing.
English preparation needs to cover more than comprehension alone. Children should also develop vocabulary, spelling and technical English so that they can handle the different literacy demands within Paper 1.
Maths preparation should develop secure KS2 knowledge alongside the ability to solve unfamiliar problems accurately. Because Paper 2 contains both multiple-choice and written-answer questions, children need to be comfortable both selecting an answer and producing their own response.
Creative Writing is a separate paper, so writing preparation should form part of the main Crossley Heath preparation programme rather than being treated as an optional extra.
A sensible progression is literacy and numeracy foundations → vocabulary and technical English → Maths accuracy and problem solving → Creative Writing development → flexible application → timed work → complete Yorkshire Calderdale mocks.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.
The Crossley Heath School 11 Plus Pass Marks
We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Crossley Heath School 11 Plus pass mark.
Results from our Yorkshire Calderdale mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in English, Maths, Creative Writing, vocabulary, technical English, accuracy, timing or exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.
How to Prepare for The Crossley Heath School 11 Plus
Effective Crossley Heath preparation should develop secure English, Maths and Creative Writing skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.
The strongest preparation develops the underlying skills first before gradually introducing mixed question formats, tighter timings and complete papers.
English Preparation
Paper 1 includes English comprehension and technical English, including spelling and vocabulary.
Children should become comfortable reading unfamiliar passages carefully, identifying relevant information and understanding exactly what a question requires.
Vocabulary should be developed consistently because stronger word knowledge supports comprehension, spelling, technical English and Creative Writing.
Technical English should also be practised directly rather than assuming that general reading ability will cover every aspect of the paper.
Maths Preparation
Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before substantial time pressure is introduced.
Children should then progress towards mixed mathematical problems where they need to decide independently which method is required.
Because the Maths paper includes both multiple-choice and written-answer questions, children should practise both response formats.
Written-answer practice is particularly useful because children cannot rely on seeing the correct answer among a list of options.
Creative Writing Preparation
Creative Writing forms a separate third paper in The Crossley Heath School FSCE test.
Children should develop the ability to plan, structure and sustain a response while using appropriate vocabulary, varied sentence structures and accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Early writing practice should prioritise quality, organisation and technical accuracy.
Once children can produce stronger responses consistently, realistic time pressure can gradually be introduced.
Full mock exams are most useful later in preparation, when they can help identify whether remaining weaknesses lie in English, Maths, writing, accuracy, timing, concentration or exam technique.
