Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus uses the Lincolnshire test set by GL and consists of two separate multiple-choice papers: Paper 1 is Verbal Reasoning and Paper 2 is Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Paper 1 – Verbal Reasoning is a 50-minute multiple-choice test with answers recorded on a separate answer sheet.

Paper 2 – Non-Verbal Reasoning is a multiple-choice paper divided into separately timed sections. Children therefore need to work within the time allocated to each individual section.

The two papers are normally taken approximately one week apart.

What Does the Spalding Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The Lincolnshire test is focused entirely on reasoning, so preparation needs to develop both the underlying skills and the specific techniques required for Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Vocabulary is particularly important for Verbal Reasoning. A child may understand how a question type works but still struggle if unfamiliar words prevent them from recognising the relationship being tested.

The 50-minute Verbal Reasoning paper also requires sustained concentration across a full reasoning test.

Non-Verbal Reasoning creates a different challenge because children need to analyse visual information systematically while working within separately controlled timed sections.

This means children cannot depend on finishing one section quickly and using the spare time elsewhere. Later preparation should therefore include practice where each Non-Verbal Reasoning section is timed independently.

Separate answer sheets also make accurate recording important. Children should become comfortable transferring each answer correctly without losing their place.

A sensible progression is vocabulary and reasoning foundations → individual reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed sections → full papers → complete Lincolnshire mock exams.

Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus pass mark.

Results from our Lincolnshire mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, accuracy, timing or exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.

How to Prepare for the Spalding Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective Spalding Grammar School preparation should develop secure Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.

The strongest preparation builds vocabulary and reasoning techniques first before gradually introducing unfamiliar questions, tighter timings and full papers.

Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.

Children should learn systematic methods for the different verbal reasoning question types they encounter while developing vocabulary consistently over time.

New words should be introduced deliberately and revisited regularly rather than memorised briefly and then forgotten.

Once individual question types are secure, children should increasingly practise mixed Verbal Reasoning work so they need to identify the appropriate technique independently.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires children to analyse visual information carefully and identify patterns, relationships and changes.

Children should learn to compare figures methodically rather than relying on instinct or choosing an option simply because it appears plausible.

Preparation should begin with individual reasoning techniques before moving towards mixed Non-Verbal Reasoning work where the required method is not signposted in advance.

Preparing for Timed Non-Verbal Reasoning Sections

The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper is divided into separately timed sections.

Once the underlying reasoning methods are secure, children should therefore practise working accurately within individual timed sections.

This is different from one long paper where time can be redistributed freely. Children need to become comfortable finishing the questions they can within each section before time is called.

Multiple-Choice Answer-Sheet Technique

Both papers use multiple-choice questions with answers recorded on a separate answer sheet.

Children should practise transferring their answers carefully and checking that the question number on the paper matches the number they are marking on the answer sheet.

This should become increasingly automatic so avoidable recording mistakes do not undermine otherwise correct reasoning.

Building Exam Technique and Stamina

Once the underlying reasoning skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.

Children should progress from accurate untimed questions to shorter timed exercises, full timed sections and eventually complete Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers.

The Verbal Reasoning paper requires sustained concentration for 50 minutes, while the Non-Verbal Reasoning paper requires children to adapt to separately controlled sections.

Our Lincolnshire mocks can then bring these skills together under realistic test-style conditions and help identify any remaining weaknesses.
