The King’s School Grantham 11 Plus Exam Format

The King’s School Grantham uses the standard Lincolnshire Grammar Schools 11 Plus format, consisting of two separate multiple-choice papers: Paper 1 Verbal Reasoning and Paper 2 Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Paper 1 — Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning paper is a 50-minute multiple-choice test. Children record their answers on a separate answer sheet.

Preparation needs to develop a broad range of Verbal Reasoning techniques alongside strong vocabulary, because vocabulary knowledge supports many of the skills needed to interpret and solve verbal questions accurately.

Paper 2 — Non-Verbal Reasoning

The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper is also multiple-choice and is divided into separately timed sections. Children therefore need to become comfortable moving between different visual reasoning question types while responding to individual section timings.

Answers are recorded on a separate answer sheet.

The Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers are separate and are normally taken approximately one week apart.

What Does the King’s School Grantham Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The assessment focuses specifically on Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, so preparation should develop these skills thoroughly rather than treating them as smaller parts of a broader generic GL course.

For Verbal Reasoning, vocabulary development is particularly important. Children may understand how a question type works but still struggle if they do not understand the words involved.

Non-Verbal Reasoning requires a systematic approach to visual patterns and relationships. The separately timed sections also mean children need to become comfortable adapting quickly between question types and working within controlled timings.

Preparation should progress from vocabulary and reasoning foundations → individual reasoning techniques → accuracy → mixed reasoning work → flexible application → revision → timed work → mocks.

The King’s School Grantham 11 Plus Pass Marks

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent The King’s School Grantham 11 Plus pass mark.

Results from our Lincolnshire mocks are best used to measure progress and identify weaker areas in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, accuracy, timing and exam technique rather than as a direct prediction of an official entrance-test result.

How to Prepare for The King’s School Grantham 11 Plus

Effective preparation should build secure reasoning foundations before children rely heavily on complete timed mock papers.

Children should first learn individual techniques carefully, then move towards mixed work where they need to recognise the required method independently. Timed work should be introduced progressively once accuracy and understanding are secure.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning requires both reasoning technique and a strong vocabulary.

Children should learn systematic methods for the different reasoning question types while also developing vocabulary consistently over time.

Vocabulary work should involve learning new words, revisiting them regularly and understanding how they are used in context rather than simply attempting repeated test questions.

Once individual Verbal Reasoning techniques are secure, children should move towards mixed practice where they need to identify the required approach for themselves.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal Reasoning rewards careful and systematic observation.

Children should learn to identify changes and relationships involving features such as shape, position, pattern, rotation and reflection rather than selecting answers simply because they appear visually plausible.

The Lincolnshire Non-Verbal Reasoning paper contains separately timed sections, so children should eventually practise moving between question types while following individual section timings carefully.

Timed work is most useful after the underlying techniques are secure, allowing children to develop the combination of accuracy, pace and adaptability needed for the real assessment.
