Barton Court Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Barton Court Grammar School 11 Plus uses the shared Kent Test. Children complete two scored multiple-choice papers, together with a separate writing exercise.

The first paper combines English and Maths and lasts approximately one hour including practice exercises. The English section includes comprehension and other literacy questions, while the Maths section is based on Key Stage 2 mathematical knowledge.

The second paper is a Reasoning paper covering Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning. It also lasts approximately one hour including practice sections. The Non-Verbal element is divided into shorter individually timed sections.

Children record their multiple-choice answers on separate answer sheets, so accurate answer-sheet handling is an important part of realistic preparation.

There is also a 40-minute writing exercise, including 10 minutes for planning. The writing is not routinely marked as part of the Kent Test score, but it may be considered during the Headteacher Assessment process.

What Does the Barton Court Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The Kent Test requires children to move between English, Maths and several different forms of reasoning, so preparation should develop both secure subject knowledge and the ability to adapt quickly between different styles of question.

The English section requires efficient comprehension alongside strong vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation. These language skills also support performance in Verbal Reasoning.

Maths preparation should build secure KS2 knowledge and strong arithmetic fluency so that routine calculations do not use unnecessary time. Children should increasingly be comfortable deciding independently which mathematical method a problem requires.

The Reasoning paper requires both verbal flexibility and systematic visual observation. Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning preparation should teach children to identify relationships involving shape, rotation, position, reflection and spatial movement accurately.

The separate writing task should not take priority over the scored English, Maths and Reasoning papers, but children should still have some experience of planning and producing a coherent piece of writing within the available time.

Barton Court Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

There is no permanent raw percentage that guarantees admission to Barton Court Grammar School.

The Kent Test produces three age-standardised scores: English, Maths and Reasoning. Kent then sets an overall grammar-school qualifying threshold together with a minimum score that must be achieved in each of the three areas.

These thresholds can vary between test years, so a historic Kent Test score should not be treated as a permanent target for future applicants.

Being assessed suitable for grammar school also does not automatically guarantee a place at Barton Court. If the school receives more eligible applications than it has places available, its current oversubscription criteria are applied.

Practice-paper percentages can still help parents monitor progress, but different practice papers vary in difficulty and should not be confused with the official standardised Kent Test thresholds.

How to Prepare for the Barton Court Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective preparation for Barton Court Grammar School should first establish secure underlying skills and then help children apply those skills accurately within the timed, multiple-choice structure of the Kent Test.

Learning Street’s GL programmes are designed around this approach. Rather than relying on repeated testing alone, our courses combine structured learning, practice, revision and progressively more timed work across the areas required for the Kent Test.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Children need to read unfamiliar material efficiently while retaining enough detail to distinguish between closely matched possible answers.

Regular reading should be combined with deliberate vocabulary development and technical English practice. Strong vocabulary also supports the Verbal Reasoning section of the test.

Maths Preparation

Secure KS2 Maths is essential, but children also need enough arithmetic fluency to complete routine calculations efficiently within the timed paper.

Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable. Preparation should increasingly require children to decide independently which method to use when tackling unfamiliar problems.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and strong language skills. A child may understand how a question works but still struggle if important vocabulary or verbal relationships are unfamiliar.

Preparation should therefore combine systematic reasoning practice with regular vocabulary development and revision.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning reward careful, systematic observation.

Children should learn to identify relationships involving shape, position, rotation, reflection and spatial movement rather than selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible. The individually timed sections also make it important that children become comfortable working efficiently within short periods.

Writing Exercise Preparation

The Kent Test also includes a timed writing exercise. Although this is not routinely marked as part of the Kent Test score, it may be considered during Headteacher Assessment.

Children should therefore have some experience of planning a response quickly, organising their ideas clearly and writing accurately within a limited period. This should supplement rather than replace preparation for the scored English, Maths and Reasoning papers.

When your child is ready to apply these skills under realistic timed conditions, Learning Street’s Kent mock exams provide structured practice based on the known demands of the Kent Test.
