Rickmansworth School 11 Plus Exam Format

The Rickmansworth School 11 Plus is part of the South West Hertfordshire test administered using GL Assessment and consists of two papers: Paper 1 is Mathematics and Paper 2 is Verbal Reasoning.

Paper 1 – Mathematics requires children to apply secure mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. Strong KS2 foundations, reliable arithmetic and the ability to decide independently how to approach unfamiliar questions are therefore important.

Paper 2 – Verbal Reasoning requires children to apply reasoning techniques using language and vocabulary. Children need both familiarity with verbal reasoning methods and sufficiently strong vocabulary to understand unfamiliar words accurately.

Our current South West Hertfordshire information does not publish exact timings or a particular response format for either paper, so these should not be invented or inferred from another GL test.

What Does the Rickmansworth School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The Rickmansworth School test has a focused structure because Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning are tested in separate papers.

For Mathematics, children need enough fluency with core methods that routine calculations do not consume unnecessary time. Once the foundations are secure, preparation should increasingly require children to identify independently which method a problem requires.

Verbal Reasoning depends on both technique and vocabulary. A child may understand how a particular reasoning question works but still struggle if unfamiliar words make the question difficult to interpret.

The separate-paper structure also makes subject-specific stamina important. Children need to maintain concentration and accuracy throughout sustained Mathematics work and sustained Verbal Reasoning work rather than relying on regular changes between subjects.

A sensible progression is core numeracy and vocabulary → mathematical fluency and verbal reasoning techniques → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed subject work → complete South West Hertfordshire mock exams.

All four mock exams contain different questions, allowing families to space fresh tests throughout preparation and use later mocks to measure improvement.

Rickmansworth School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

We do not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Rickmansworth School 11 Plus pass mark.

A percentage achieved on one of our South West Hertfordshire mocks should primarily be used to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.

The two-paper structure also means that an overall mock result can conceal an important difference between Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning performance.

A child may achieve a reasonable total score while repeatedly losing marks in one of the two areas.

Our detailed answers can help identify whether marks are being lost because of mathematical knowledge, vocabulary, accuracy, reasoning technique, timing or exam technique.

Parents can then target those weaker areas before using another fresh South West Hertfordshire mock to assess whether performance improves.

How to Prepare for the Rickmansworth School 11 Plus

Effective Rickmansworth School preparation should concentrate on developing strong Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning skills before children rely heavily on complete timed mock exams.

Our full GL programmes cover a broader GL syllabus that also includes Vocabulary, English and Non-Verbal Reasoning. For Rickmansworth School specifically, however, the current South West Hertfordshire test information identifies Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning as the tested areas.

Maths Preparation

Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become accurate and reliable before significant time pressure is introduced.

Children should then progress towards mixed mathematical problems where they need to decide independently which method is required.

This helps develop flexible problem solving rather than dependence on questions being grouped by topic.

Because Mathematics has its own dedicated paper, children should eventually practise maintaining accuracy and concentration throughout sustained Maths work.

Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and vocabulary.

Children should learn systematic methods for the verbal reasoning question types they encounter while developing vocabulary consistently over time.

New words should be introduced deliberately and revisited regularly rather than memorised briefly before moving on.

A child may understand the reasoning process required by a question but still lose marks if important words are unfamiliar, so vocabulary development should remain a regular part of preparation.

Because Verbal Reasoning has its own dedicated paper, children should eventually practise sustaining concentration across longer periods of reasoning work rather than completing only short exercises.

Building Exam Technique and Stamina

Once the underlying Mathematics, vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning skills are secure, timed work should become increasingly important.

Children should move progressively from accurate untimed work to shorter timed exercises, longer subject sections and finally complete South West Hertfordshire mock papers.

Our South West Hertfordshire mocks can then bring the preparation together under realistic test-style conditions and help identify any remaining weaknesses.

Which Rickmansworth School 11 Plus Course Should You Choose?

We provide Complete, Enhance and Boost GL preparation routes for children preparing for Rickmansworth School.

Learning Street’s full GL programmes cover Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This is broader than the current Rickmansworth School test structure, which specifically identifies Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.

The additional English and Non-Verbal Reasoning content in a general GL course should therefore not be interpreted as additional subjects in the Rickmansworth School entrance test.

The most suitable programme depends mainly on how much preparation time remains.

Preparation time Course Best for
30–40+ weeks Complete GL Our most comprehensive GL preparation
15–30 weeks Enhance GL A shorter structured GL programme
6–15 weeks Boost GL Focused GL preparation when less time remains

Complete GL — 30–40+ Weeks

Our Complete GL 11 Plus Programme is our most comprehensive GL preparation route.

It contains 40 structured parts covering Vocabulary, English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The programme includes more than 60 timed papers and tests, full answers with detailed explanations and additional work focused on core skills such as vocabulary development and accuracy in English and Maths.

For Rickmansworth School, the Maths, Verbal Reasoning and vocabulary work is particularly relevant to the current test. The programme also contains English and Non-Verbal Reasoning because it is designed for the wider GL 11 Plus.
