Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus uses the Buckinghamshire GL Assessment test, consisting of two papers covering English, Verbal Reasoning, Maths, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning.
Paper 1 contains English and Verbal Reasoning. Learning Street’s current Buckinghamshire information reflects a five-minute practice period followed by 25 minutes of assessed English questions, followed by five minutes of Verbal Reasoning practice and 20 minutes of assessed questions.
Paper 2 combines Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning with Maths. The Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning element is divided into five timed subtests, while the Maths section includes a short practice period before the assessed questions.
The Buckinghamshire test uses separate multiple-choice answer sheets. Children therefore need to combine secure subject knowledge with accurate answer recording and the ability to move between sections when instructed.
What Does the Dr Challoner’s High School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The breadth of the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus means preparation for Dr Challoner’s High School should develop English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Spatial Reasoning rather than concentrating heavily on one subject.
English and Verbal Reasoning are closely linked through vocabulary. Children may understand the reasoning method behind a question but still lose marks if unfamiliar words make the problem harder to interpret. Regular reading and structured vocabulary development should therefore continue throughout preparation.
Maths preparation should first secure core KS2 skills so routine calculations can be completed accurately and efficiently. Once these foundations are reliable, children can spend more preparation time applying their knowledge to less familiar and multi-step problems.
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require children to analyse visual information systematically. They should learn to identify changes involving shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and shading rather than relying on visual guesswork.
The section-based timing also means children need to become comfortable switching between different types of work. Preparation should therefore develop from core skills → accuracy → flexible application → revision → timed work → complete mock exams.

Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
Learning Street’s current preparation information does not provide one fixed raw practice-paper percentage that should be treated as a permanent Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus pass mark.
A percentage achieved on a Learning Street mock should therefore be used mainly to measure preparation and progress rather than treated as equivalent to an official entrance-test result.
An overall mock percentage can also hide differences between individual sections. A child may appear to be performing strongly overall while consistently losing marks through weaker vocabulary, English comprehension, a particular Maths area or one type of reasoning.
Learning Street’s detailed mock answers are most useful when they help identify whether marks are being lost because of knowledge gaps, accuracy, timing or exam technique.
Parents can then target the weakest areas before using another fresh mock to see whether performance has improved under timed conditions.
How to Prepare for the Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus
Effective Dr Challoner’s High School 11 Plus preparation should develop secure underlying skills before children rely heavily on complete mock papers.
Learning Street’s approach is to build English, Maths, vocabulary and reasoning skills first, consolidate them through revision and then introduce progressively more timed work as the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus approaches.
English Preparation
English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Children need to read unfamiliar material accurately while still working efficiently within the available time.
Regular reading should be combined with structured comprehension practice so children become confident retrieving information, interpreting wording carefully and distinguishing between closely related answer choices.
Vocabulary development is particularly valuable because it supports performance in both English and Verbal Reasoning.
Maths Preparation
Maths preparation should begin with secure KS2 knowledge. Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become sufficiently fluent that routine calculations do not use unnecessary time.
Children should then progress towards mixed problems where they need to decide independently which mathematical method is required. This helps develop flexible problem solving rather than dependence on questions being organised by topic.
Accuracy should come before speed. Timed Maths practice becomes more useful once children can consistently choose and apply the correct methods.
Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Verbal Reasoning combines language knowledge with logical thinking. Children should learn reliable methods for word, letter, code and relationship questions rather than simply memorising answers to familiar examples.
Vocabulary development is central to this preparation. Even where a child understands the reasoning technique, unfamiliar words can prevent them from recognising the relationship being tested quickly enough.
New vocabulary should therefore be learnt systematically and revised regularly throughout preparation.
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require careful analysis of visual information.
Children should learn to check features such as shape, number, position, direction, rotation, reflection and shading systematically. The aim is to develop methods that can be transferred to unfamiliar questions rather than relying on recognition of previously practised examples.
The Buckinghamshire test’s timed subtests also mean children need to become comfortable changing quickly between different types of visual reasoning question.
Once these core skills are secure, Learning Street’s Buckinghamshire mock exams can be introduced to develop timing, concentration, stamina and familiarity with separate answer sheets.
