Ashlawn School 11 Plus Exam Format
The Ashlawn School selective entry route uses the shared West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test provided by GL Assessment. Children sit two multiple-choice papers of approximately 50–60 minutes each, including time for instructions and example questions.
Each paper is divided into smaller individually timed sections testing English Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning. Children record their answers on separate multiple-choice answer sheets.
The sections are individually timed. Children can only work on the section they have been instructed to complete and cannot return to an earlier section once it has finished.
Under the current West Midlands format, English and Verbal Reasoning together account for 50% of the weighted result, Maths accounts for 25% and Non-Verbal Reasoning accounts for 25%. Scores are also standardised to take account of differences in age.
What Does the Ashlawn School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
The individually timed structure means that preparation should involve more than simply completing full practice papers. Children need to become comfortable working accurately within shorter time limits and switching between different styles of question.
English Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning together currently carry half of the overall weighting, making reading efficiency and vocabulary particularly important. A child may understand a reasoning technique but still lose time if unfamiliar language slows them down.
Maths preparation should build secure KS2 knowledge alongside arithmetic fluency so routine calculations can be completed efficiently. Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require children to identify visual relationships systematically rather than relying on an answer simply looking correct.
Children should also practise recording answers accurately on a separate answer sheet. Secure underlying skills should come first, followed by progressively more timed and realistic practice as the test approaches.
Ashlawn School 11 Plus Mock Exams and Practice Papers
Ashlawn School’s selective entry route uses the shared Warwickshire and West Midlands entrance test, so Learning Street’s West Midlands 11 Plus mock exams are the relevant Learning Street mock papers for children preparing for Ashlawn.
Learning Street carries out ongoing research when developing its West Midlands mocks, with the aim of reflecting the known content, difficulty, instructions and timings of the test as closely as practical. The packs include realistic answer sheets, detailed parent and invigilation instructions, guidance on how time should be called, information about what to expect from the test experience and full detailed answers.
The four West Midlands mock exams use different questions, allowing children to complete several realistic mock experiences without repeating the same material.

Ashlawn School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
There is no single permanent raw percentage that guarantees a selective place at Ashlawn School.
Raw marks from the West Midlands entrance test are standardised and weighted before a total score is calculated. Ashlawn then applies the academic standards and admissions criteria relevant to its selective places.
Ashlawn’s admissions arrangements distinguish between the academic standard required for selective consideration and the rules used to allocate available places. These thresholds and arrangements can change between entry years, so historic scores should not be treated as permanent pass marks.
Practice-paper percentages can be useful for tracking progress within a particular set of materials, but different papers vary in difficulty and these percentages should not be confused with an official Ashlawn qualifying score.
For preparation, it is more useful to aim for consistently strong performance across English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning while identifying weaknesses in knowledge, accuracy and timing.

How to Prepare for the Ashlawn School 11 Plus
Effective preparation for Ashlawn’s selective entry test should build secure underlying skills first and then help children apply them accurately within the individually timed, multiple-choice structure of the West Midlands entrance test.
Learning Street’s GL programmes are designed around this approach. Rather than relying on repeated testing alone, our courses combine structured learning, practice, revision and progressively more timed work across the areas needed for the Ashlawn School 11 Plus.
English Preparation
English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary and accurate use of language. Children need to read unfamiliar material efficiently while retaining enough detail to distinguish between closely matched multiple-choice answers.
Regular reading should be combined with deliberate vocabulary development and work on spelling, punctuation and grammar. Strong literacy also supports performance in Verbal Reasoning.
Maths Preparation
Secure KS2 Maths is essential, but children also need enough arithmetic fluency to complete routine calculations efficiently within timed sections.
Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable. Preparation should increasingly require children to decide independently which method to use when solving unfamiliar problems rather than simply following worked examples.
Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and strong vocabulary. A child may understand how a question works but still struggle if important words or relationships are unfamiliar.
Preparation should therefore combine systematic practice of Verbal Reasoning techniques with regular vocabulary development and revision.
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation
Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning reward careful, systematic observation.
Children should learn to identify relationships involving features such as shape, position, rotation, reflection and spatial movement rather than choosing an answer simply because it looks plausible. Regular practice helps develop a consistent method for approaching unfamiliar visual problems.
When your child is ready to apply these skills under realistic timed conditions, Learning Street’s West Midlands mock exams provide structured practice based on the known demands of the shared entrance test used for Ashlawn’s selective entry route.
