Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 11 Plus Exam Format

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School uses the shared West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test provided by GL Assessment. Children sit two multiple-choice papers, each lasting approximately 50–60 minutes including instructions and example questions.

Each paper is divided into smaller individually timed sections testing English Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Maths and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning.

There is no writing section. Children record their answers on separate multiple-choice answer sheets and can only work on the section they have been instructed to complete.

The current West Midlands weighting gives English and Verbal Reasoning together 50% of the overall result, Maths 25% and Non-Verbal Reasoning 25%. Scores are also standardised to take account of differences in age.

What Does the Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School Exam Format Mean for Preparation?

The individually timed structure means that children need more than secure subject knowledge. They also need to become comfortable switching between different question types and working accurately within relatively short timed sections.

English Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning together currently carry half of the overall weighting, making efficient reading and vocabulary particularly important. Children need to understand unfamiliar texts and verbal relationships without losing unnecessary time.

Maths preparation should develop secure KS2 knowledge alongside strong arithmetic fluency. Routine calculations should become reliable enough that children can concentrate on the more demanding parts of mathematical problems.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning require systematic observation and the ability to identify relationships involving shape, position, rotation, reflection and spatial movement.

Children should also become comfortable using separate answer sheets and moving on when an individually timed section ends. Secure underlying skills should therefore come first, followed by progressively more timed and realistic practice.

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores

There is no permanent raw percentage that guarantees admission to Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School.

Results from the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test are age-standardised rather than being treated as a simple raw percentage. Bishop Vesey’s then uses the relevant qualifying standard and its current admissions criteria when determining eligibility and allocating places.

The required score and admissions arrangements can change between entry years, so a historic qualifying score should not be treated as a permanent target for future applicants.

Achieving the required academic standard also does not automatically guarantee a place. If more eligible applicants meet the standard than places are available, Bishop Vesey’s applies its published oversubscription criteria.

Practice-paper percentages can still help parents monitor progress, but different papers vary in difficulty and should not be confused with an official Bishop Vesey’s qualifying score.

How to Prepare for the Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 11 Plus

Effective preparation for Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School should first establish secure underlying skills and then help children apply those skills accurately within the individually timed, multiple-choice structure of the West Midlands entrance test.

Learning Street’s GL programmes are designed around this approach. Rather than relying on repeated testing alone, our courses combine structured learning, practice, revision and progressively more timed work across the areas required for the Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 11 Plus.

English Preparation

English preparation should develop reading comprehension, vocabulary and accurate use of language. Children need to read unfamiliar material efficiently while retaining enough detail to distinguish between closely matched possible answers.

Regular reading should be combined with deliberate vocabulary development and work on spelling, punctuation and grammar. Strong language skills also support performance in Verbal Reasoning.

Maths Preparation

Secure KS2 Maths is essential, but children also need sufficient arithmetic fluency to complete routine calculations efficiently within individually timed sections.

Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable. Preparation should increasingly require children to decide independently which mathematical method is appropriate when solving unfamiliar problems.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Verbal Reasoning relies on both reasoning technique and strong vocabulary. A child may understand how a question works but still struggle if important words or verbal relationships are unfamiliar.

Preparation should therefore combine systematic Verbal Reasoning practice with regular vocabulary development and revision.

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning Preparation

Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning reward careful, systematic observation.

Children should learn to identify relationships involving shape, position, rotation, reflection and spatial movement rather than selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible. The individually timed nature of the test also means that children need to become comfortable applying these techniques efficiently.

When your child is ready to apply these skills under realistic timed conditions, Learning Street’s West Midlands mock exams provide structured practice based on the known demands of the shared entrance test used for Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School.
