Kendrick School 11 Plus Exam Format
The current Kendrick entrance test uses two multiple-choice papers. Learning Street’s research for our Kendrick School mock exams reflects Paper 1 as English and Verbal Reasoning and Paper 2 as Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning, with separate sections and practice questions within the papers.
Kendrick recommends that children become familiar with the multiple-choice layout, but also warns that GL familiarisation materials may not reproduce the exact timings, number of questions or every question type used in the real test. Preparation should therefore develop flexible skills rather than rely on memorising a fixed set of question patterns.
What Does the Kendrick Exam Format Mean for Preparation?
Paper 1 combines English and Verbal Reasoning, making reading efficiency and vocabulary important across both areas. A child may understand a reasoning technique but still lose valuable time if unfamiliar words slow them down.
Paper 2 combines Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Strong arithmetic fluency helps children work efficiently through calculations before moving between mathematical and visual reasoning problems.
Across both papers, children also need to manage their time, maintain concentration and record multiple-choice answers accurately. Secure underlying skills should therefore come first, followed by progressively more timed practice as the test approaches.

Kendrick School 11 Plus Pass Marks and Standardised Scores
There is no single permanent raw percentage that guarantees success in the Kendrick School 11 Plus.
Raw marks are age-standardised, and Kendrick ranks candidates using the combined age-standardised scores from the two papers. The school then applies its current qualifying and admissions arrangements.
Parents may see percentage targets suggested for commercial practice papers. These can be useful for tracking progress within a particular set of materials, but they should not be confused with an official Kendrick pass mark because practice papers can vary considerably in difficulty.
For preparation, it is more useful to aim for consistently strong performance across English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, while identifying weaknesses in knowledge, accuracy and timing.

English Preparation
Because Kendrick’s first paper combines English and Verbal Reasoning, reading ability and vocabulary support both parts of the paper.
Children should become comfortable reading unfamiliar passages at a good pace without sacrificing understanding. Preparation should also develop spelling, punctuation and grammar, alongside regular reading and deliberate vocabulary work.
Maths Preparation
Secure KS2 Maths is essential, but children also need enough arithmetic fluency to avoid losing time on smaller calculations within harder problems.
Times tables, mental Maths and the four operations should become reliable, while practice should increasingly require children to decide independently which method to use.
Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Verbal Reasoning relies on both technique and vocabulary. A child may understand how a question works but still struggle if important words are unfamiliar.
Preparation should therefore combine reasoning methods with systematic vocabulary development and revision, particularly as some Verbal Reasoning question styles may be less familiar from ordinary classroom work.
Non-Verbal Reasoning Preparation
Non-Verbal Reasoning rewards careful, systematic observation.
Children should learn to identify changes involving features such as shape, position, rotation and reflection rather than selecting an answer simply because it looks plausible. Regular practice helps develop a reliable method for approaching unfamiliar visual problems.
